Veterinary Anesthesia

We are different

Does your best friend have an upcoming anesthetic?

Anesthetic and surgical procedures are safer than ever with the introduction of newer anesthetic agents and techniques. Adherence to specific guidelines and protocols associated with anesthesia is essential to a successful outcome.

All patients undergoing anesthesia and surgery are examined by a veterinarian. Though exams may elucidate much information, all patients have pre-anesthetic bloodwork performed to lend an internal "picture" as well. A small sample of your pet's blood is taken and tested for proper organ function. Any abnormal parameters are discussed immediately with the patient's owner.

Patients undergoing anesthesia have an intravenous catheter (IVC) placed. This IVC serves multiple purposes. Having a direct port into your pet's bloodstream is crucial if an emergency should arise, and life-saving drugs need to be administered. The IVC also serves to deliver electrolyte-balanced replacement fluids, and maintain blood pressure.

Anesthesia performance and monitoring is essential to a safe procedure. Individualized amounts and types of anesthesia are determined for each patient. Patient systems that are monitored include blood pressure, respiratory rate, heart rate, oxygen saturation and temperature. Keeping close record of these values is important to avoiding emergency events.

Recovery from anesthesia is paramount to a safe return home. All patients are monitored for safety, warmth, and comfort. Our recovery suite is adjacent to our surgical suite and caring, trained practice team members are there for your pet.

These are some fine examples of what you should look for if your pet needs to have a procedure performed. If you have any questions or concerns please call or e-mail the hospital and a technician or doctor will be more than happy to listen.
